Honda 12V Battery Notes for Jamaica
This guide covers Honda-specific 12V battery notes. For battery types, terminals and recycling basics, see our general battery guide.
In a modern Honda, the 12V battery starts the engine and supports onboard electronics, including engine and transmission computers and, on hybrids, the hybrid power controllers. Heat, slow traffic and salt air can shorten battery life, so have it tested if starting becomes slow.
Sizes and Polarity
Compact Hondas such as the Fit, Fit Shuttle, Grace Hybrid and City are commonly fitted with smaller batteries, with codes such as 38B19L, 46B24L or NS40ZL (example CCA ratings of roughly 330 to 430). Larger vehicles such as the Accord, CR-V, Civic, HR-V, Odyssey and Pilot generally need larger batteries, with codes such as Group 24F or 51R appearing for some versions. These are examples only; sizes differ by model, year and market.
Polarity needs particular care. Many Japanese-market (JDM) Hondas use left-positive (L) batteries, while some US-market versions may specify a different layout. Do not assume a code from another version of the same model will fit: compare the letter, the post layout and the dimensions with your existing battery and owner’s manual before buying. Installing a battery with the wrong polarity can damage wiring or fuses.
Idle-Stop and Hybrid Models
Honda models with idle-stop (auto-stop) technology, such as the Stepwgn, commonly specify an Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB). Fitting a standard battery in a vehicle designed for idle-stop may cause the system to be disabled or warnings to appear, so check what your vehicle specifies.
Honda hybrids, including IMA, i-DCD and e:HEV models such as the Insight and Vezel Hybrid, also have a conventional 12V battery that supports start-up and the vehicle’s computers. If a hybrid is slow to start or shows warnings, have the 12V battery tested early, and follow your owner’s manual for its type and location.
Buying and Fitting Tips
Ask the seller about warranty and any applicable trade-in or core credit when you return your old battery. For help with fitting, terminal changes or any registration or reset your vehicle may need, consult a qualified auto electrician or technician.
Fitment note: battery codes and specifications on this page are examples only. Always confirm the correct battery against your existing battery, your vehicle’s specifications or your owner’s manual before buying.
